Lindy hop is a dance of African American origin, danced to the sound of Swing Jazz music that came with the great orchestreas, the ‘big bands’.
The dance originated in Harlem, a black neighbourhood in New York during the 1920-30s. At the time the dancers gathered to enjoy, dance and create new steps. Despite being a time of racial segregation, blacks and whites could come together and dance in venues such as the Savoy ballroom, the first to have this integration.
‘Lindy’ can be danced as a couple or alone (e.g. Charleston, Jazz), in jam groups and also at various speeds, from very slow to fast.
